Some Basic Facts about Austria
Before the Roman Empire conquered the central region of the European continent, there were a lot of Celtic tribes dwelling in the land that now constitutes the beautiful country of Austria. They were all eventually defeated by the Roman highly trained legions, and the land became part of the Empire.
They brought civilization in the region, meaning that, apart from the inherent corruption and slave recruiting, the Celtic tribes also learn how important it is to take regular baths, to cut their hair and shave regularly, and, most important, they learned about economy, mathematics, astrology, physics, medicine, etc.
Austria was first mentioned in an official document around the year 992 AD, the vast alpine region being called “Osterrich”, which is German for “Eastern Land”, as, at that time, it was a Margraviate under the rule of a great german leader, Babenberg Henry I. After approximately 500 years, Austria was a dominion of the Habsburg Family, which were all-important for the country's history because the clan ruled for several hundreds of years. Austria has been the victim of many attacks throughout its history, because of their wonderful alpine landscapes, and because of the fact that it was very rich in resources (the Alps were full of precious metals (gold, silver), and they also had important quantities of iron, coal and other resources the enemies needed.
